All of us who know someone who is intellectually disabled should be keenly aware as to how difficult it has been for agencies like PEP to provide annual wage increases to all of our staff. Of the most affected are our Direct Support Professionals or DSP staff which, honestly, is the backbone of this agency. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hasn’t funded a rate increase in 10 years, causing DSP wages to flat line. This is a workforce crisis!
Following is a link to a powerful video that Pennsylvania Advocacy and Resources for Autism and Intellectual Disability (PAR) has produced to tell the story of the DSP workforce crisis and to advocate for increased funding for DSP wages. I hope you will take the time to view the video and share it with family, friends and legislators to spread the word about the current campaign regarding the DSP work force crisis. At the end of the video please sign the petition and ask your friends and family to do the same! While there will still be work to do to fix this issue, the problem will be brought to the attention of those that can make a difference between poverty level wages and a comfortable living for the career many of us have chosen and are committed to do.
